Caves of Zugarramurdi

About the place
The Caves of Zugarramurdi are a vast natural complex formed by the erosion of the Olabea stream through limestone rock. The main gallery is striking in scale, reaching twelve meters in height and extending over one hundred meters in length. This site lacks typical stalactites but is famous for its mystical history as a venue for pagan festivals and witch gatherings. Local legends of sorcery led to the infamous witchcraft trials of the early 17th century, now detailed in a nearby museum. Today, the caves attract visitors with their raw natural beauty and the unique atmosphere of ancient folklore.
