Mirador de Franco

Mirador de Franco

About the place

Mirador de Franco is a viewpoint set above the Ricote Valley, one of the most scenic river corridors in the Murcia region. From here, the Segura River is visible below as it curves in wide bends between terraced orchards, groves of palm trees, and the whitewashed villages of Villanueva del Rio Segura and Ulea. The viewpoint marks the beginning of a steep narrow trail that climbs along the Canal del Taibilla and crosses the sierra to reach the summit of El Cajal at 553 metres. The Ricote Valley as a whole is known for its Moorish heritage — after the Reconquest, it was one of the last areas in Spain to retain a largely Muslim population before the mass expulsion of the Moriscos in 1614. The combination of the river, the terraced landscape, and the surrounding mountains makes this one of the more rewarding viewpoints in the region.
