Castillitos Battery

Castillitos Battery

About the place

The Castillitos Battery was constructed in the 1930s to protect the Cartagena naval base from maritime attacks. The architecture of the fort is unique because its buildings are styled after a historic castle with crenelated towers and stonework. The main feature of the site is its two colossal Vickers cannons, which are capable of firing shells weighing nearly a ton. Situated at an elevation of 250 meters above sea level, the fortification serves as a perfect vantage point for coastal surveillance. Today, this abandoned military site is open to the public, offering a chance to explore underground tunnels and see massive artillery pieces.
