The Banana Museum of Madeira (BAM) stands at Lugar de Baixo, on the south coast of Madeira in the municipality of Ponta do Sol. It combines an indoor exhibition on the banana — its place in Madeiran culture and economy, and some 500 years of island trade — with a working plantation that visitors walk through on their own. Nurseries, growing rows and fruiting mango and avocado trees are part of the route. A cafe and shop sell banana ice cream, banana beer and other banana products.

What makes it special
The plantation is open ground here, and visitors walk it at their own pace. The route passes growing rows, nurseries and the beds where young plants are raised, with mango and avocado trees carrying fruit between them. The indoor exhibition is small and stays on one subject: how the banana shaped Madeira's economy and culture, and how the island's trade developed over some 500 years. Staff speak several languages and run guided tours. The cafe serves banana ice cream and banana beer, and the shop sells banana drinks and sweets.
