Museums

Most fill buildings that were something else first: a 1784 timber warehouse in Ísafjörður, a Franciscan monastery above Maó, a windmill of 1762 in Sant Lluís, a glass dome on six hot-water tanks in Reykjavík. Thirty-nine are in Iceland, twelve of those in and around Reykjavík; the other ten are on Menorca and Ibiza. Subjects run from turf-house farming and Viking settlement to whales, minerals, wartime occupation and contemporary art. Several of the rural Icelandic museums open in summer only.
