Geysir lies on Iceland's Golden Circle, in the south of the country, and gave the world the word geyser. The original spring rarely erupts now; its neighbour Strokkur spouts every few minutes. The fumaroles of Lagoa das Furnas are on São Miguel, in the Azores, where steam columns and bubbling pools are watched from paths and viewing platforms. The smell of sulphur is strong.
