Volcanic Pools

Most are ocean pools: hollows in black lava that the Atlantic fills and refreshes. Eleven of the sixteen lie on the north coast of Tenerife, with three more in Madeira and the Azores. Iceland holds the two exceptions: Brimketill, a wave-carved basin below a viewing platform, and Seljavallalaug, spring-fed and built in 1923. Facilities range from showers, a bar and lifeguards at Doca do Cavacas to no fee and no staff at Seljavallalaug.
