Glaciers

Ten of the twelve are in South Iceland. The other two are Kaldalón in the Westfjords and Langjökull in the west. Most are lagoons where icebergs break off the glacier front, or tongues of blue ice striped with ash from past eruptions. The walks in are short: Svinafellsjokull lies ten minutes from a free car park, Skaftafell Glacier at the end of a 3.5km trail. Jokulsarlon takes the crowds, and the lagoons either side of it stay quiet. The ice cave and the Langjökull tunnel are reached only with a guide.
