Skaftafell Glacier

Skaftafell Glacier

About the place

Skaftafell Glacier is a massive outlet glacier adjacent to Svinafellsjokull in Vatnajokull National Park, southern Iceland. The glacier flows into a large sandy valley (sandur), shaped by its melting streams. A marked hiking trail leads to the glacier base, providing close views of ice rivers and melting patterns. The surrounding landscape is quiet and dramatic, with gray sands and rocks meeting the towering ice wall. Rapid retreat of the glacier is visible, with markers showing where the ice edge was decades ago, highlighting climate change impacts.
