Svartifoss Waterfall

About the place
The waterfall is fed by meltwater streams from the surrounding mountains. Hexagonal basalt columns form a natural backdrop shaped by cooling lava. The contrast between dark rock and white water is especially striking. Access is via a marked hiking trail within Vatnajokull National Park. Svartifoss is often cited as an inspiration for Icelandic architectural forms.
