Hofs Church

Hofs Church

About the place

In the scattered farms of Öræfi, between Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, this small church sits under a thick roof of turf and grass. Built in 1884, it is the youngest of Iceland's surviving turf churches and the last one raised in the old way — timber frame, low stone-and-turf walls, and a green roof that blends into the burial mounds around it. The National Museum cares for it, yet it stays a working parish church, one of only six turf churches left in the country.
