Kirkjugólf (The Church Floor)

Kirkjugólf, the "church floor," is one of Iceland's neatest natural illusions: a patch of about 80 square metres where the flat, hexagonal tops of basalt columns sit so evenly they look like a laid stone floor in the grass. Despite the name, no church ever stood here — the tiles are eroded ends of columnar basalt, the same cooling-crack geometry as Iceland's famous cliffs, only seen from above. It lies a short walk off Route 203 just outside Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a natural monument since 1987.
