Eldhraun Hiking Trail

Eldhraun is one of Iceland's largest lava fields, left behind by the Laki eruption of 1783. Over time a thick moss crept over the hardened flow, and today it runs as an unbroken green carpet along the south coast. A short marked loop leads off the Ring Road into it: instead of watching the moss blur past the car window, you can step out and stand among it, close enough to see the deep, spongy cushion over the black rock. It takes only a few minutes.
