Eldhraun Hiking Trail

Eldhraun Hiking Trail

About the place

At the edge of the vast Eldhraun lava field, formed by the Laki eruption in 1783–1784, lies a viewpoint where a walking trail leads through the lava. The black lava is now covered by thick green moss, creating an almost otherworldly scene. Visitors can follow marked paths to explore the enormous lava flows. The trail offers views of the fragile northern nature reclaiming space from volcanic chaos. Eldhraun is a unique example of Iceland’s volcanic and ecological processes.
