Eldhraun Lava Field

Eldhraun Lava Field

About the place

Eldhraun Lava Field is located on the southern coast of Iceland, one of the largest lava fields in the world. The field was formed during the catastrophic Laki eruption in 1783–1784. It covers approximately 565 square kilometers and is entirely covered with thick silver-green moss. The moss softens the sharp edges of volcanic rocks, creating an alien, peaceful landscape. Visitors must stay on designated viewing platforms, as the moss takes decades to recover.
