Systrafoss
About the place
Systrafoss is a waterfall in the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, on Route 1 in South Iceland. It falls in twin ribbons through a rare stand of native birch. The name means "the sisters' falls" and recalls a Benedictine convent that stood here from 1186 to the Reformation. The clifftop lake Systravatn feeds it and carries an old legend of two nuns. See it from the village in two minutes, or climb the steep stepped path to the lake and a wide view over the Skaftá plain.
