Ægissíðufoss Waterfall

Ægissíðufoss Waterfall

About the place

Ægissíðufoss is wide rather than tall — the spring-fed Ytri-Rangá spills across its full width over a low basalt step, about 4.5 km south of the town of Hella off Route 1. This is one of Iceland's best-known salmon rivers, so a fish ladder climbs the side of the falls, and anglers work the water from summer into autumn. The flow stays steady all year, and on a clear day Mount Hekla rises behind it. A riverside path from Hella keeps it an easy stop that the tour buses skip.
