Gluggafoss Waterfall

Gluggafoss earns its nickname — glugga means “windows.” The Merkjá drops through a bluff of soft palagonite that the water keeps carving, so instead of one clean face the fall spills partly through openings in the rock, appearing and disappearing as if through windows. A short path and a set of steps climb up beside it through the green Fljótshlíð farmland, and it stays quiet even when the coast road's big-name falls are packed. Signposts carry both names, Gluggafoss and Merkjárfoss, and the shape keeps changing as the soft rock erodes.
