Gluggafoss Waterfall

Gluggafoss Waterfall

About the place

Gluggafoss is part of the Merkjárfoss waterfall system, formed by the Merkjá River as it cuts through layers of soft palagonite and harder basalt. Over time, the water carved tunnels and openings in the cliff, creating natural “windows” that give the waterfall its name. The lower cascade drops freely into a narrow canyon, while the upper tier flows through rock arches before emerging into daylight. The area is quiet, with a short and easy walking path leading directly to the viewpoint.
