Fossálar Waterfall

Fossálar Waterfall

About the place

Fossálar is a broad, gently terraced cascade on the little Fossála river, just off Route 1 east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in south Iceland. The water fans over black basalt ledges instead of dropping in one fall — closer to a run of rapids. It sits on the edge of the moss-covered Eldhraun lava field. A short path from the free car park reaches it, and it rarely draws a crowd.
