Steinbogafoss Waterfall

About the place
Steinbogafoss is one of the waterfalls strung along the Skógá river above the famous Skógafoss, in Skógar in South Iceland (Suðurland). Its name means "stone-arch falls", after the natural rock bridge that spans the river at this point. The water drops in a broad curtain roughly eight metres high and around twenty metres wide as the river works its way down through a series of basalt steps. You get there on the Waterfall Way, the lower section of the Fimmvörðuháls trail, which leaves the top of Skógafoss and follows the river upstream past one cascade after another. Steinbogafoss is where many day hikers turn back, since beyond it cliffs make the falls harder to see from the path. The walk is straightforward but exposed, with no shelter, so good footwear and wind protection help.
