About the place
Skógafoss is one of Iceland's biggest and most photographed waterfalls: a 60 m curtain, about 25 m wide, dropping off a sheer cliff that marks the island's former coastline. The ground at the base is flat, so you can walk right up — close enough to be soaked, and to catch the rainbows the spray throws up on sunny days. A steep staircase climbs the cliff to a railing at the top, where the Skógá river slides toward the edge and the Fimmvörðuháls trek sets off. It's right on the Ring Road at Skógar.
