About the place
The LAVA Centre puts the ground beneath South Iceland on display. Hvolsvöllur lies within reach of three of the country's most active volcanoes — Hekla, Katla and Eyjafjallajökull — and the exhibition explains how they and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge behave. Expect a shaking earthquake corridor, a wall of live seismometers reading the whole island, and a cinema of eruption footage. It is an easy indoor stop on the Ring Road, good in any weather.
