Caves of Laugarvatn

Halfway around the Golden Circle, between Þingvellir and the town of Laugarvatn, two caves cut into a low ridge sheltered Icelandic families in the early twentieth century. A couple moved in around 1910; from 1918 a family lived here until 1922, raising children born inside — the last Icelanders known to be born in a cave. A reconstructed turf front and a short guided tour show how they kept house underground, sharing it with their sheep through the cold.
