Raufarholshellir Lava Cave
About the place
Raufarhólshellir formed thousands of years ago, when a river of lava crusted over and drained away, leaving a tube more than a kilometre long in southern Iceland. Guided tours cross raised footbridges beneath collapsed skylights, where daylight lands on rock stained red, black and ochre. Inside it holds a few degrees above freezing all year, so winter meltwater builds ice stalagmites on the floor. Bring warm layers and firm shoes.
