Geothermal Park Hveragerdi

Geothermal Park Hveragerdi

About the place

Geothermal Park Hveragerdi is situated above a powerful geothermal system beneath the town. Within the park visitors can observe boiling pools, steaming vents, and bubbling mud geysers. The geothermal heat is traditionally used for cooking, including baking geothermal bread buried in the ground for a full day. Visitors can also boil eggs directly in hot springs using natural heat. After the earthquake of 2008 several new geothermal features appeared, highlighting the constant activity beneath the surface. The town is often called the flower capital of Iceland due to year round greenhouse farming powered by geothermal energy.
