Kerid Crater

Kerid Crater

About the place

Kerið is a volcanic crater on the Golden Circle in South Iceland, near Selfoss. Its walls are rust-red and black volcanic rock streaked with moss, wrapped around a still lake of milky blue-green water. The colours are the draw — the red rim against the mineral-tinted lake stands out on a route of waterfalls and geysers. A level path loops the rim, and steps lead down to the water's edge. It is small and quick, easy to slot between the bigger stops.
