Hnausapollur Crater

About the place
Hnausapollur sits in the volcanic badlands of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, a short drive north of Landmannalaugar. The highland road F208 passes right along its rim — the edge of a near-perfect explosion crater holding startlingly blue-green water. Its second name, Bláhylur, means "the blue pool". Steep inner walls in rust-red, black and moss-green drop to the still lake, a textbook piece of highland geology. You can pull up almost at the edge, though the fullest view is a short, steep scramble to the lip. Like everything on the F208, it is summer-only and four-wheel-drive.
