Maelifell Volcano

About the place
Maelifell Volcano is an extinct volcano located in the highlands of southern Iceland. The volcano is covered with bright emerald moss that contrasts with the surrounding black volcanic desert. It was formed during eruptions beneath a glacier and now rises alone on the Sandur plain near the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The F210 route to Maelifell is challenging, involving river crossings and rugged terrain, suitable only for 4x4 vehicles. The striking green cone in the dark volcanic landscape creates a surreal, otherworldly impression. Maelifell Volcano is a symbol of Icelandic highland wilderness.
