Axlafoss Waterfall

About the place
Axlafoss — also spelled Axlarfoss — is a modest but lovely waterfall on the glacial Hólmsá, dropping into a narrow canyon in the Syðra-Fjallabak highlands northeast of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Almost nobody stops here: it sits at the end of a short spur off a highland F-road, and you look down from the rim, as there is no safe way to the base. That is the appeal — a quiet, pristine corner best treated as a brief pause on a highland drive toward the Rauðibotn crater.
