Holmsarfossar Waterfalls

About the place
Hólmsárfossar is not one tall drop but dozens of small waterfalls and rapids that the Hólmsá river forms as it spreads over low lava ledges. The braided channels shift with the water, so the scene looks different when the river rises or falls. The falls sit deep in the Fjallabak highlands; a rough track leads in from a highland car park, and downstream a small crater lake sits ringed by old volcanic rims. The treeless valley is almost always empty — backcountry Iceland with no crowds and no railings.
