Ljotipollur Crater

Ljotipollur Crater

About the place

Ljotipollur is a volcanic crater formed during the 1477 eruption. The crater lake is filled with cold blue-green water, contrasting with steep brick-red walls rich in iron. Patches of neon moss cover the rim, creating an almost surreal landscape in sunlight. The crater has a perfectly oval shape and impressive size. The trail to Ljotipollur passes over black highland sands, enhancing the feeling of being on another planet. Trout live in the crater lake despite its volcanic origin.
