Ljotipollur Crater

An explosion in 1477, part of the Veiðivötn fissure system, blasted out this bowl about 1.5 km across in the southern highlands. Its steep walls are a vivid iron-red, dropping to blue-green water, with patches of neon-green moss along the rim. Brown trout live in the lake though nothing flows in or out — a real mystery. It sits just off the highland roads near Landmannalaugar: an easy walk around the rim, then a steep scramble down to the shore.
