Katla Ice Cave

Katla Ice Cave

About the place

Most Icelandic ice caves melt shut in summer; this one does not. Katla Ice Cave lies inside Kötlujökull, a glacier off the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap that buries the Katla volcano, and the heat and movement of that ground keep a cave open all year. The walls are banded — vivid blue where the ice is dense, streaked black where old volcanic ash froze in. You cannot walk up alone: the roads in are private and the ground is glacier, so visits run as guided super-jeep tours from Vík.
