About the place

Thakgil campsite is nestled in a valley with mossy cliffs, canyons, and natural shelters, offering a surreal and tranquil experience. The name translates as “Roofed Canyon,” reflecting the dramatic landscape of green hills contrasting with black volcanic sands. Several caves around the campsite served as natural shelters for shepherds over the centuries. The campsite includes a communal dining area inside a natural cave, illuminated by candlelight. Access via Kerlingardalsvegur offers one of Iceland’s most scenic drives, passing otherworldly formations. Several hiking routes of varying difficulty start from the campsite, leading to the glacier and panoramic views of the Highlands.
