Thakgil
About the place
Þakgil is a campsite hidden in a sheltered canyon in the hills behind Vík, in south Iceland; its name means roughly "roof gorge." A gravel road of about 14 km leaves the black-sand coast for a green inland world of moss-covered cliffs, twisting ravines and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier above. The draw is a natural cave fitted out as a communal dining hall, where campers cook and shelter from the wind.
