Hafursey Mountain
About the place
Hafursey is a broad palagonite massif on the black plain of Mýrdalssandur, east of Vík in south Iceland. Its flanks are green with moss and grass, cut by gullies and small valleys. The surrounding sand was laid down by glacial floods from Katla, the volcano under the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. A rough track off the Ring Road leads to a small hut and hiking trails. It is a walker's mountain, not a roadside viewpoint, and its stark setting has drawn film crews.
