Gigjagja Cave
About the place
Gígjagjá is a wind- and water-cut cave at the foot of Hjörleifshöfði, a palagonite headland that once stood as an island before glacial floods from Katla buried the sea in sand. From deep inside, the cave mouth frames a pointed-eared silhouette against the daylight — the reason the Yoda Cave nickname all but replaced its real name. The rock is ribbed in soft browns and the floor is fine black sand. It is a short detour off the Ring Road on the Mýrdalssandur plain.
