Thingvellir Church

Þingvallakirkja is a small white church with a black roof on the valley floor of Þingvellir National Park, below the Almannagjá cliffs. A church has stood here since Icelanders adopted Christianity at the Althing around the year 1000; the present timber building dates from 1859. Beside it stands Þingvallabær, a row of turf-gabled farmhouses that is the Icelandic prime minister's summer residence, making this modest churchyard one of the country's quiet symbolic centres.
