Thingvellir Church

About the place
Thingvallakirkja is a historic wooden church that serves as a symbol of Iceland’s spiritual center. It stands near the Parliament Fields, where the country’s fate was decided for centuries. Despite its modest size, the church looks solemn against the rugged cliffs of the Silfra rift and the expansive plains. Inside, it houses ancient relics including bells and a 17th-century altar. The nearby National Cemetery holds the graves of notable Icelandic figures, including poets Jonas Hadlgrimsson and Einar Benediktsson.
