The waterfall plunges directly into a deep canyon carved by volcanic activity. Basalt walls frame the water flow, emphasizing the vertical scale of the drop. In the past, a natural stone arch crossed the canyon near the waterfall. Seasonal water levels significantly affect the power and appearance of the fall. Ofaerufoss is considered one of the visual highlights of the Eldgja area.
