Ofaerufoss Waterfall

Ófærufoss falls in two steps into the Eldgjá, a green-and-rust canyon torn open by the Katla volcanic system in one of the largest lava eruptions on record. For decades a natural rock arch bridged the lower cascade, and photos of water pouring beneath it made the falls famous. The arch collapsed in 1993, worn down by frost and spring floods, but the twin drop into its dark pool is still one of the highlands' finest sights. Reaching it means fording rivers on the F208, then a short walk.
