Geysir

Geysir is a steaming geothermal field in the Haukadalur valley of southern Iceland, and the birthplace of the word “geyser”. The great spring it was named for now rarely erupts; its neighbour Strokkur takes over, firing water skyward every few minutes while visitors watch from behind the rope. Between the pools the ground bubbles and hisses, stained yellow and blue-green by sulphur and minerals. It is the middle stop on the Golden Circle, between Þingvellir and Gullfoss.
