Gullfoss Waterfall

Gullfoss is the great set-piece of the Golden Circle and one of Iceland’s most powerful waterfalls. The glacial Hvítá races across a broad shelf, drops a first step, then swings and plunges again into a deep canyon nearly a mile long. From many angles the water seems to pour straight into the ground. On bright days the spray throws rainbows that give the “golden falls” their name. Walkways and steps reach viewpoints from a safe overlook to the churning brink.
