What makes it special

Vineyards run right up to the walls of Castel Prösels, which stands on the slopes above Fiè allo Sciliar with the Sciliar massif (Schlern) behind it. The castle is well preserved and keeps its Late Gothic and Renaissance shape; Leonhard von Völs, governor of Tyrol, had it rebuilt in the early sixteenth century. The way in is a guided tour — a group, a set departure time, and the rooms in the order the guide takes them. One visitor found the guiding exceptional. A café works inside the castle, and beyond the walls and the vines there is nothing else at the spot.

Good to know

  • Guided tour only: departures are at set times from 11:00, and arriving between them means a wait — one visitor came at 11:30 and got the 14:00 tour.
  • Summer season: the castle opens for guided tours in summer.
  • Café on site: there is a café inside the castle, and nothing else at the spot.
  • Cards work: credit and debit cards and contactless payment are all accepted.

Getting there

Most arrive by car: the castle car park sits about 160 m from the walls, with a second one roughly 300 m out, which leaves a couple of hundred metres of approach road on foot. The bus stop is about 240 m below the castle, and the walk up from it follows the same road.

Best time to visit

Best: the 11:00 opening — the first tour of the day goes then, and the castle shuts in the early afternoon, so a late start can mean no tour at all.

Avoid: Saturday, when the castle does not open, and the winter months: the guided tours are a summer operation.
