Ruderi del Castello Wolkenstein

Ruderi del Castello Wolkenstein

The walls carry straight on from the cliff face: the castle was built into the rock, not on top of it.

Ruderi del Castello Wolkenstein are the remains of a castle built into the cliffs above Selva di Val Gardena, in the Dolomites of South Tyrol. A small, well-marked track branches off the Via Crucis, the stations-of-the-cross path, and climbs the mountainside to the walls in about five minutes. From the ruins the view runs across the surrounding peaks and down to the valley floor. Entry inside is not allowed for safety reasons, so the site is seen from the outside, and most people come to it as a detour on a longer walk.

What makes it special

The track to the ruins branches off the Via Crucis, the stations-of-the-cross path above Selva di Val Gardena, and climbs the mountainside for about five minutes. It is small and well marked. Partway up the castle appears in the rock face, and some walkers stop right there, take the photograph and turn back. Carry on and you stand at the walls, with the surrounding peaks in one direction and the valley floor a long way down in the other. The detour is short enough that people fold it into the Via Crucis walk without planning for it.

Good to know

  • No toilets: there are none at the ruins or within 800 m; the nearest drinking fountain is about 750 m away.
  • Wear shoes with grip: the last stretch is a small marked track climbing the mountainside.
  • Come as part of the Via Crucis walk: the ruins sit a few minutes off the stations-of-the-cross path, which is how most people reach them.
  • Keep it short: it works as a quick stop while you are nearby and is easy to skip when time is tight.

Getting there

The ruins cannot be reached by car. Vehicles stop at the car parks on the valley floor, a little over 200 m from the site, and the rest is on foot: the Via Crucis path first, then the marked branch that climbs the mountainside to the walls. Arriving by bus leaves much the same walk, with the nearest stop about 600 m away and the climb on top of it.
