Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

About the place

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a stone religious building rising above the abandoned settlement of Castro. The church was originally built in the Romanesque period and later modified with Gothic elements. Its massive walls and compact form reflect the need for protection in a remote border area. The elevated position offers wide views over the hills and the reservoir in the Esera valley. Today the church stands as a silent witness to the decline of the village and the history of rural Aragon.
