Es Culleram is a cave in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja, in the north-east of Ibiza, close to the village of Sant Vicent de sa Cala. In the Punic period it served as a sanctuary of Tanit, the chief goddess of Carthage, and excavations recovered terracotta figurines of the goddess left there as offerings. The cave is gated and kept locked outside its short opening hours.

What makes it special
Past the gate the light drops away and the air turns cool, the same cool it holds in every season. People came up into this hill to leave offerings to Tanit, the goddess of Carthage, and the clay figurines found in the cave are the reason it is known at all.
It is far quieter than the island's show cave at Can Marçà. The opening window is narrow, so those who do get in usually have the cave almost to themselves, and the silence suits a place that was once given over to worship.
Good to know
- The gate is often locked: the cave opens only on a few mornings a week, and it has shut even then for technical problems.
- There are no toilets at the cave and none nearby.
- There is no drinking water nearby either, so bring your own.
- The entrance is not wheelchair accessible.
- Inside, the cave keeps its own cool temperature; a light layer helps on a hot day.
