Huerto de las Flores is a botanical garden in Agaete, a town on the north-west coast of Gran Canaria. It stands in the town centre, about 150 m from the bus stops by the church and Plaza de la Constitución. The garden covers a modest plot planted with tropical and subtropical species, among them frangipani and outsize specimens of plants more familiar as houseplants. It is known for its quiet: birdsong, running water and shade.

What makes it special
The first thing is the sound. Birdsong, wind in the branches and running water fill the garden, and the street outside feels further away than it is. On a warm day the scent of frangipani hangs under the trees.
The plants are the other surprise. Species most people know from a pot on a windowsill grow huge here, alongside a good number of less familiar specimens. The garden is not big. Walk it slowly, stop in the shade and listen.
Good to know
- Entry is by ticket, bought at the entrance.
- Dogs are not allowed inside, so plan around that if you travel with one.
- There are toilets on site.
- The garden is not large. Give it time anyway: the interest is in the individual plants.
- It works well with children.
Getting there
The garden sits in the centre of Agaete. Buses stop at Plaza de la Constitución and at Iglesia de Agaete, both about 150 m away in a straight line, and from either stop it is a walk through the town streets.
By car, there is a free paved car park about 40 m away and a second parking area about 100 m away. The free car park gets very busy at weekends, so on a Saturday or Sunday allow time to find a space.
Best time to visit
Best: Thursday or Friday, soon after opening in the morning.
Avoid: Monday to Wednesday, when the garden is closed, and weekends if you are driving.
The garden opens only four days a week, the free car park is at its busiest at weekends, and the birds are at their loudest in the cool of the morning while the shade keeps a sunny visit comfortable.
