Risco Amogoje Viewpoint

Step out of the car and the Atlantic fills the horizon, running into the sky until the line between them blurs. Below lie the houses of Taganana and the broken north coast of Anaga. Around them rise sharp volcanic ridges and bare rock, with every slope that can hold a plant covered in green.

The view opens on both sides of the road, so look both ways before you drive on. The stop is quick: a few photographs, a long look at the coast, and the next car is waiting for your space.

• Three or four spaces sit behind a chain off the road, so cars leave in the order they arrived: the first one in has to pull out first.
• When the spaces are full, the wait is usually short, as most people stop only for photographs.
• There are no toilets and no drinking water at the viewpoint, and none nearby.
• The TF-134 here is narrow and steep, with zigzag bends; a car that struggles on steep climbs will struggle on this one.
• Rock slides come down onto this road during and after rain.

The viewpoint sits right on the TF-134, so the car pulls up at the edge of the view. The road up is narrow and steep and climbs through tight zigzag bends, so drive it slowly.

A chain separates the three or four parking spaces from the carriageway, which turns them into a queue: the first car in is the first that can leave, and the ones behind wait for it. Two further car parks lie a little under a kilometre away in a straight line.

By bus, the Amogoje stop is beside the viewpoint.

Best: a dry, clear day, ideally in the morning before cloud gathers on the Anaga ridges.

Avoid: rain and the hours after it.

The north side of Anaga catches the trade-wind cloud, which can close the view down entirely, and rock slides on the road are common during and after rain.
