Town Gate

Portal de la Villa is a baroque-style brick arch forming part of the town’s old wall. The gate leads to Belchite Viejo, a ghost town destroyed during the 1937 Civil War battles. Surrounding terrain is the sun-baked Aragon plain scattered with debris from ruined buildings. The arch frames views of empty streets and the ruined San Martin church, its shelled vaults standing stark against the sky. Brick patterns in the Mudéjar style peek through cracks, hinting at the town’s former glory.
