When to go
High season
Dec â Mar
Ski season, and the reason most people come. The village stands at 1,428 m and the Saslong run above it hosts the men's Downhill and Super-G of the Alpine Ski World Cup; race days pull the biggest crowds of the year into the valley.
Low season
Apr â May
The gap between the two seasons. Snow still lies on the high ground while the valley floor is bare, and the village goes back to something close to its 1,980 residents.
High season
Jun â Sep
Long days, open meadows and the valley busy again â the second of the two seasons Santa Cristina Valgardena lives by, with the high ground reachable from the village itself.
Shoulder
Oct â Nov
Shortening days and the first snow on the peaks. The valley is quiet between the walking crowds and the skiing ones.
How long to stay
Three or four days is a fair stay if the village is a base: one day on the high ground each side of the valley, one for the neighbouring villages down and up the road, and one held back for weather, which changes the plan here more often than anything else. Skiers tend to book by the week.
Getting around
Santa Cristina Valgardena sits on the single valley road that threads Val Gardena, with Ortisei (UrtijĂ«i) below it and Selva (SĂ«lva) above; nearly every journey here begins by turning onto that road. Bolzano, the nearest city, is about 30 km west. No railway reaches the valley â the line runs through the Isarco valley below, and the last leg is by road, whether by hire car, bus or transfer. Buses link the three Val Gardena villages, and pass roads climb east and south towards the neighbouring valleys. From the village itself, cable cars run up to the slopes on both sides of the valley, and that is how most visitors reach the high ground in winter and in summer alike.
