Tías

Tías stands at 200 m, 4 km back from Lanzarote's south coast and 10 km west of the island capital, Arrecife. The municipality runs down to the sea, and its shore is taken up by Puerto del Carmen, the island's largest resort, where Lanzarote's first hotels, the Gran Hotel and the Fariones, opened in 1967. Inland lie the villages of Mácher, La Asomada, Conil and Masdache. The Portuguese Nobel laureate José Saramago made his home in Tías.

When to go

High season

Nov – Mar

Winter-sun months, when northern Europeans fill Puerto del Carmen and the south coast stays mild while the rest of the continent is cold.

Shoulder

Apr – Jun

Long, dry days and a resort that has thinned out after winter; the trade wind keeps the afternoons fresh.

High season

Jul – Aug

European school holidays fill the resort again, and the bare inland slopes around Tías offer little shade at midday.

Shoulder

Sep – Oct

The sea is at its warmest after the summer, and the crowds ease before the winter season begins.

How long to stay

Most people who stay in the municipality stay in Puerto del Carmen and use it as a base for the whole of Lanzarote; a week covers the island without hurry. The town of Tías and the inland villages of Mácher, La Asomada, Conil and Masdache fit into half a day away from the coast.
