Teguise

Every Sunday the main square of Teguise fills with handicraft stalls, and with even more visitors than stalls. The town was the capital of Lanzarote until 1852 and still seats a municipality that spans both coasts and takes in La Graciosa and the islets to the north. Inside its boundaries lie the resort of Costa Teguise, grown since the 1970s, and the Jardín de Cactus at Guatiza.

When to go

High season

Nov – Apr

Lanzarote's busy winter season, with mild days that suit a slow walk round the old town and the Sunday market.

Shoulder

May – Oct

The summer sun is fierce in the open square, so do the market and the streets in the morning and bring a hat.

How long to stay

Half a day covers the old town: the market square, the streets around it and the windmill by the bus stop. If the market is the reason, come on a Sunday and arrive in the morning, because it winds down by early afternoon. The town has no free-standing bars, so it works best as a day trip from the coast.

Getting around

Buses 7, 9 and 26 run the main roads, linking the town with Arrecife in about 30 minutes via Tahiche. Heading north, the 7 and 26 turn inland to Haría, while the 9 stays on the coast as far as Órzola, the port for the ferries to La Graciosa. The main stop is by the windmill next to the market square, and on Sundays extra market buses come in from Arrecife, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.

The catch is frequency. Buses come every hour or two, and the sun at a roadside stop is fierce. A car of your own saves that wait. The town also has its own taxi.

Frequently asked questions

  1. When is the Teguise market?

On Sunday mornings, in the main square. It sells mostly handicrafts and draws large crowds, and extra buses run to it from Arrecife, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.
  2. How do I get to Teguise from Arrecife?

By car, take the LZ-1 to Tahiche and then the LZ-10. Buses 7, 9 and 26 make the trip in about 30 minutes, running every hour or two and stopping by the windmill next to the market square.
  3. Is Costa Teguise the same place as Teguise?

No. Costa Teguise is a resort on the coast within the same municipality. It has grown since the 1970s into a much larger place with its own identity, while Teguise is the old inland town.
  4. Was Teguise the capital of Lanzarote?

Yes, until 1852. The capital today is Arrecife, to the south.
