Church of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe

Old parish church of Lanzarote's former capital, with the Virgen Milagrosa statue and a sacred-art museum on one ticket.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is the main church of Teguise, which served as the capital of Lanzarote until the nineteenth century. Founded in the early years of Castilian settlement, it was damaged in pirate raids and badly burned in 1909, and much of what stands today is the rebuilding that followed. Inside are the statue of the Virgen Milagrosa, a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and a painting of the Assumption. Entry is by ticket, which also covers a nearby museum of religious art.

What makes it special

Face the altar and look to the right: the chapel of the Tabernacle holds a painting of the Assumption of Our Lady. Most of the devotion here goes to the statue of the Virgen Milagrosa, and Our Lady of Fatima has her own statue as well.

This was the main church of the town that governed Lanzarote for centuries, and it still stands at the heart of the old streets, white walls trimmed with dark volcanic stone. The ticket carries on past the church door. It also opens a nearby museum of religious statues and art, so the visit is two buildings long.

Good to know

  • One ticket covers both the church and the nearby museum of religious statues and art.
  • The fee applies to everyone who enters, even if you only want to light a candle or say a prayer.
  • An audio guide can be rented for an extra fee.
  • Public toilets are about 150 m away, and the tourist information office about 70 m.

Getting there

The church stands in the old centre of Teguise, inland in the north of Lanzarote. Drivers have a free asphalt car park about 130 m away in a straight line, with a second car park at much the same distance, and there is wheelchair-accessible parking.

By bus, the nearest stop is Convento San Francisco, about 125 m away, with Teguise Market about 176 m away. From either one it is a walk of a couple of streets. The tourist information office sits about 70 m from the church, and a town map stands about 90 m away, useful for finding the museum the ticket also covers.

Best time to visit

Best: a weekday, when the old town is quiet and the church can be seen at an unhurried pace.

Avoid: Sunday morning, when the Teguise market fills the streets around the church and Mass is held inside.

The Sunday crowds and the service both leave little room to look at the statues and the painting in peace.
