Avista Navios

You order at the counter inside, and someone carries the plate down to a terrace that faces the open ocean. That arrangement is most of what Avista Navios is about. The food is straightforward: sandwiches, mozzarella quiche, burgers with chips, pizza, coffee, açaí smoothies. Cats and dogs move between the tables, and the cats are bold about an unattended plate. It is a snack bar rather than a restaurant, and the view does the work the menu does not.

• Ordering: you order inside at the counter, and the staff bring the food out to the lower terrace.
• Cats: the cats work the tables and will go for a plate left unattended.
• Rain: the terrace is open to the weather, and in rain you eat indoors instead.
• Payment: credit and debit cards are accepted, so there is no need to carry cash.
• Facilities: there is a toilet on site, and the place suits children.

Most visitors arrive by car. The place is in Seixal, on the north coast of Madeira, and street parking is free. The seating works on two levels: you order on the upper level, at the counter inside, and the terrace below faces the ocean. Food ordered inside is carried down to you.

Better: clear weather, when the outdoor tables and the view over the ocean are usable.

Avoid: rain. The terrace is open, and wet weather moves the whole visit indoors.

The north coast of Madeira catches more cloud than the south, so the sky here can differ from the one you left on the other side of the island.
